The title of my blog is On Becoming… An Outrageous Old Broad, and I chose those words especially because the word Becoming makes me think of a journey. And, it’s a journey all of us are on. One day, we’ll all be old. My philosophy, for as long as I can remember has been: I’m going to have the best life possible. And, when my time is up, I hope I’m still having a great time and I’m laughing! That’s it in a nutshell.
When I first had those thoughts I was somewhere in my early twenties. Then, somewhere in my thirties I heard the phrase Outrageous Old Broad for the first time, and thought, “I like the sound of that!”
I define an Outrageous Old Broad this way:
Outrageous: Cheeky, Sassy, Playful, Amusing, Irreverent, and Fun!
Old: No longer a teenager, and glad of it!
Broad: A woman who knows herself and likes who she is!
Nowadays, most young women (especially teens) have many different women who act as role models for them. There weren’t as many when I was a teenager.
During my teens most of the famous female singers and actresses at that time were on the voluptuous side, with a few exceptions – Audrey Hepburn -- being my favourite. She became my role model. I thought she was gorgeous and enchanting. Knowing what I know now, I realize she personified the words Outrageous Old Broad. Or, maybe I should say she personified my definition of those words (see above).
The first thing I did was attempt to look like her…minus the cigarette holder and the expensive jewelry!
I quickly realized that try as hard as I might; I was not going to be Audrey’s twin. However, believe it or not – at that time, some people actually gave me the highest compliment I could receive. They said I reminded them of Audrey Hepburn. That truly was music to my ears! And, to this day, I thank Audrey Hepburn for being a terrific role model, for me.
Below were my attempts to look like Audrey.
A big Thank You for allowing me to indulge myself on my trip down memory lane!
Oh, one last thing… a word from Audrey herself:
